How do I use essential oils?

Savour and Aura provides a complete set of uses, cautions, and benefits with each of its products, these directions may vary basis your skin type and reaction.

I see the term “carrier oil” being associated with the use of multiple oils. What is a carrier oil, and what difference does it make to the original product?

A carrier oil is a vegetable oil—such as coconut oil, olive oil, or grapeseed oil—that can be used to dilute essential oils. Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils and “carry” them to your skin. That’s because essential oils are potent and can cause irritation when applied directly to your skin. It prevents waste due to excessive application. Please maintain the number of drops recommended per 50 ml of carrier oil, for the right use. Vegetable shortening, butter, margarine, or petroleum derivatives (such as mineral oil, baby oil, and petroleum jelly) should never be used as carrier oils.

What is a patch test? Why is it needed before applying the essential oil of my choice? How do I do it?

Before using essential oil for the first time, skin patch testing is often recommended as a method of determining if you have an existing sensitivity/irritation to the natural constituents present in particular essential oil. Knowing if you have an existing sensitivity or irritation to oil may be helpful before using the essential oil topically. To do a skin patch test, simply take a small amount of diluted essential oil and apply it to your inner elbow. Apply a band-aid over the oil. Then, wait for a reaction such as irritation, itchiness, redness, inflammation, etc. If a reaction occurs, remove the band-aid, wash the oil off, and apply a carrier oil over the area. The optimal time to wait is 48 hours. If no reaction occurs within this time, it is assumed that you may not have a sensitivity or allergy to that oil and that it is safe to use.

What if I experience skin discomfort or irritation?

If you feel burning, redness, or itching or any other discomfort in the area where you’ve applied any essential oil or blend, wash your skin with soap and water and apply a carrier oil on the affected area. If you’ve had a negative reaction from that particular oil or blend, it would be best to use it very cautiously. Drink adequate water to encourage the release and removal of toxins in your body. Before using the essential oil again, perform a patch test (see above under “What is a “patch test?”) and dilute with a carrier oil as needed.

I experienced certain allergies in using one of the essential oils. What should I do?

Effects of allergy due to topical (on skin) application like irritation and inflammation can last for longer durations as compared to those of skin irritation. Apply carrier oils on affected regions to lessen the effects. If the effects are prolonged, medical help should be sought. Use these essential oils cautiously in the future. If you suffer from an allergic reaction due to inhalation, turn off the diffuser and increase ventilation in your area. Allergy due to ingestion will show signs like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea. Immediately discontinue use and call for medical help.

Can essential oils be applied to sensitive areas?

Avoid contacting sensitive areas such as eyes, wounded or broken skin, inner ears, nose, or any other sensitive parts of the body. We do not recommend the direct use of essential oil in these regions. It is best to use body butter, hydrosols, and carrier oils for the face. However, if you do wish to use essential oils for the face, you can go for skin-loving oils such as Lavender, Patchouli, Frankincense diluted to 1% concentration.

I/Someone I know is pregnant. Is it okay for me/her to use S&A’s essential oil?

It is recommended that before using an essential oil, you consult with a health care advisor who has experience with essential oils, as it works differently for everybody. It is safe to stick with essential oils that come with very few precautions like Lavender, Frankincense, Roman Chamomile, Sweet Orange, and Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) in 1% dilution and should only be used after completing the 1st trimester. These oils are safe for use during pregnancy and should be used only through diffusers to avoid complications. If you wish to use blends during your pregnancy it's best to consult a certified aromatherapist.

I experienced a slight irritation on the skin after using certain oils in sunlight. Why is this happening?

Some essential oils, mostly citrus oils are known to cause skin sensitivity due to their phototoxic nature. These oils cause burning, blisters or discoloration on the applied area when you go out in the sun or are exposed to UV light (such as light from a tanning bed). The phototoxic risk of these oils can last up to 18 hours. This should be kept in mind when using phototoxic essential oils. Always look for contents like citrus and VItamin C.

What about the use of essential oils if I have a medical condition? Can essential oils interact with prescribed medications?

If you have a disease or medical condition or are using a prescription medication, it is recommended that before using an essential oil, you consult with a health care advisor who has experience with essential oils. Seek the advice of the prescribing physician and a pharmacist about potential interactions between any medication and essential oils.

Can I use essential oils on children? Is there any specific measure to be taken in the case of an application?

There is no specified age for kids to start using essential oils, hence its best to use carrier oils, body butter, and hydrosols for children under the age of 5. Adults buy most essential oils or blends and therefore they are diluted and made from an adult-market perspective. Essential oils that work best for kids above the age of 5 include Lavender, Frankincense, Sweet Orange, Roman Chamomile, and Cedarwood in 1% concentration. Store essential oils away from the reach of children to avoid accidents or ingestion.

Can I use essential oils on my pets?

It would be best to consult a certified aromatherapist if you wish to use essential oils on your pets.
